February 11, by all accounts this should have been a good game between these two 5A Region II teams with the Lions having an edge over the Warriors. The first quarter was the type of battle we expected and looked like it was setting the tone for a good game. Leander lead by 2 points after one, but Westwood's offense woke up out of its daze and just ran over the Lions defense scoring 26 in the second quarter the Warriors went into to the locker room leading 39 to 32.
That second quarter burst must have been all the win less Warriors needed to keep them going into the second half. The third and fourth quarters were a defensive battles between both teams in the end the Warriors were able to hold off the Lions giving them their first district win.
The Warriors had great games from guard Derek Nalodka scoring 20 points and guard Wade Swofford put in 16 of his own to help the Warriors pull of a great win. The Lions had big offensive numbers from both McBride (21) and Nwakamma (19) but just couldn't do much defensively to hold off the Warriors putting them at 6 and 4 in district play.
Westwood 72, Leander 61
WHS: Swofford 14, Pearcy 5, Bishop 9, Femal 3, Holeman 8, Nalodka 20, Dettman 6, Daly 7
LHS: McGehee 3, Nwakamma 19, Eangle 8, Berry 2, Hauger 2, McBride 21, Biscoe 6
