February 14, this might be the game of the week St. Michael's Academy defeats San Antonio's Antonian Prep for a second time this season grabbing second place in the 5A TAPPS division. This game was an all out defensive battle with no team scoring more than St. Mike's 19 points in the first quarter. With Antonian focussing their defensive efforts on senior guard Jake Kocher things opened up for both Austin Burch (20) who had his biggest scoring night of the season as well as Adam Whitlock (11).
At the start of the preseason many felt that Antonio with two Major Division I recruits 6'8" 230 lb Jonathan Holmes (University of Texas) and 6'9" 229 lb Darrious Hamilton (Boise State) had all but secured the district title over all other district teams. In fact many predicted Antonia to be the 2010/2011 5A TAPPS State Champions. Well in a game where height means so much it didn't seem to help the Apaches much, height means nothing if you don't have your heart in it as well. St. Michael's and Central Catholic both defeted Antonian twice this season showing that defense, team work, and heart can get you over a team that on paper may have the advantage.
St. Michael's front court is really coming alive defensively but their going to need more from their post players if they want to move through the playoffs. St. Mikes had a total of 25 rebounds in this game 19 of them from their front court players Adam Whitlock (8), Jake Kocher (5), Jaymes Maldonado (2), and Austin Burch (4). At some point the low post players will need to step up and committ to rebounding if they want to give their front court a chance to get out in front and get more fast break points.
Good luck Crusaders on Saturday February 19 at 6:00 PM playing El Paso's Cathedral in the first round of the playoffs.
