The St. Michael's offense has been known to start off slow and pick it up as the game progresses, but not last night. In last nights win against El Paso SMCA came out ready and fired up.
6' 5" forward Joseph Tybor was assigned the duty of attempting to slow down Cathedrals #23 point guard Mason Zuniga who has averaged 10 ppg and 8.4 assist. Tybor did an excellent job. With his height and long arms Zuniga struggeld to get off any uncontested shots and had a difficult time locating his teammates. Along with Tybor, Clarencio Guerrero was brought in off the bench to give Tybor a breather and also did an excellent job slowing down Zuniga. As the game progressed Zuniga became visibly upset at one point under cutting Austin Burch as he attempted to pick up a lose ball.
With team captain Jake Kocher struggling offensively guard Austin Burch and forward Adam Whitlock picked up their offense with Burch scoring 13 and Whitlock added 15 of his own. Along with his 15 points Whitlock added 7 rebounds and 3 assist making it one of his best games of the season and it could not have come at a better time.
Cathedral scored a shot just before half time cutting the lead to 3 points and looked like they had the momentum going in at half time. But that was short lived the Crusaders came out on fire in the second half pushing the ball up court and breaking down Cathedral's full court press. Guard Jaymes Maldonado had 5 assist most of them in transition where he excels at pushing the ball and finding his teammates. He had a fantastic no look pass to forward Alex Cady who finished it off with a left hand layup that electrified the fans.
By the middle of the fourth quarter with the Crusaders leading by 10 points it was easy to tell that Cathedral was not longer in the game emotionally. The Crusaders had an answer for anything they attempted and when they scored the Crusaders came right back and scored one of their own. As the fourth quarter counted down the Crusaders left little doubt who was going to move on winning the game 60 to 49 and moving on to play St. Thomas on Friday night in Houston Texas.
