Jaymes Maldonado St. Michael's Academy

Congratulations to Jaymes Maldonado 2011 graduate of St. Michael's Academy.  Jaymes will be the newest member of the William Penn University Statesman basketball team in Iowa in the fall.  Jaymes played for several AAU teams including ATX Boys, the Austin Ice and the ATX Crew.  According to Coach Henry Head Coach at Wm Penn Jaymes will be competing for the starting point guard position as a freshman and has a good chance at making an instant impact in his first year.    


Oskaloosa--William Penn University men's basketball coach John Henry has announced the signing of Jaymes Maldonado to a letter of intent to attend the University in the fall and compete for the men's basketball program.

Jaymes, the son of David and Terri Maldonado, is from Kyle, Texas and currently attends St. Michael's Catholic Academy HS.  Under the direction of Coach Mackey Smith, the 6-0 guard averaged 13 points, five rebounds, and six assists en route to first-team all-district honors last winter.

An AAU star as well, Maldonado played for three teams and traveled across the country from 2008-2011, garnering MVP awards at six different tournaments.

"Jaymes is a floor leader and has a great passion for the game," Henry said. "He simply plays the right way."

Yolonzo Moore Akins High School

Congratulations to Yolonzo Moore a 2011 graduate of Austin's Akins High School who will be joining the Hawks of The University of Hartford in the fall of 2011.  Yo averaged 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assist per game as a senior. He was named District 15-5A player of the year but not only an offensive threat he also keyed the Akings pressure defense. He also earned a nomination to the McDonald’s All-American team for his stellar senior season.

“Yolonzo is a coach’s dream,” Akins coach David Peavy commented. “He is an ultimate leader and competitor. He leaves behind a great legacy at Akins High School, but I am sure he will start another one at Hartford.”

“Yolonzo is a tremendous athlete,” Gallagher said. “He’ll be our point guard of the future after Andres Torres. We really love his communication skills. We love the way he plays without the ball. He’s constantly moving, and is a tremendous
on-the-ball defender.”


Congratulations Yo we look forward to seeing some great things from you at Hartford.

Joel Devastey Stony Point High School

Congratulations to Joel Devastey a 2011 graduate of Stony Point High School who will be joining the Leopards of Temple College in the fall of 2011.  Joel played on several AAU teams including the ATX Boys coached by Jake Varela and the Austin Ice coached by retired Spur Johnny Moore.

With his 6'7 frame and his ability to shoot the short range jumper Joel should make a quick impact at Temple.  We have watched Joel for several years and have watched him develop into an excellent shooter and a good defender.  We wish Joel lots of luck in 2011 and look forward to some great things from him at Temple.    

Deon Mitchell Pflugerville High School

Congratulations to Deon Mitchell a 2011 graduate of Pflugerville High School who will be joining the University of Northern Iowa Panthers in the fall of 2011.  Deon was a first-team all-state pick as a senior in 2011.  He averaged 21 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds per game also a first-team all-region honoree, central Texas MVP and District MVP.  As a junior Deon averaged 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game and played on several AAU teams including the ATX Boys coached by Jake Varela and the Texas D1 Ambassadors.  He was a three time first-team all-district pick and tallied all-state honors as sophomore.


Deon was also recruited by Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Marquette, Texas A&M and TCU chose UNI because "the coaches are cool and the team is unselfish." Deon said "Deon has a great feel for creating opportunities for his teammates," UNI head coach Ben Jacobson said. "He has the ability the score, but does a good job of making the game easier for the rest of his team. Deon is very good in the open floor and will be fun to watch."

We have watched Deon since he was in middle school and look forward to great things from him at the college level.  Make sure you bring a coat Deon because the winters in Iowa are COLD....
